To me, the jury is still out. Waiting for Gavins explanation.
I think the most interesting aspect to the story is the part nobody is paying attention to: Ian Grigg's actions.

Why would he continuing to maintain that Wright's claim is valid?
  • He believes or knows that it's true
  • He's trying to spread misinformation to protect the real Satoshi (team members)
  • He's trying to spread misinformation to harm Bitcoin
  • He's trying to spread misinformation to benefit Bitcoin
Add to each above possibility the standard assumption that public actions could always either be voluntary or compelled. As always, the higher the stakes in a situation the more the possibility of compulsion must be entertained.

@Justus Ranvier thanks.
Still, the issue to me is how on earth could Gavin be tricked. I find that very hard to believe.
EDIT: I would never consider one single factor as proof. Gavin must have had multiple reasons to trust him. Including the signature he described.

I agree that Ian Grigg's comments are quite interesting. But to unpack the "believes" part of your first possibility a little, it could be that:

-- CW is part of the satoshi team, not a critical part, and has used what access/knowledge he had from that to convince Ian (and Gavin & Matonis) that he's the primary mind behind bitcoin.
-- Ian has been completely fooled by a con-artist (who perhaps found himself in possession of material that allowed him to convince Ian and others).

NewLiberty actions are also puzzling. I was at the event in Estonia keystrike is talking about, and I heard NewLiberty story like him: Then NewLiberty confirmed on Twitter that CW was the guy he met.

There is so much social proofs pointing toward CW=SN...

BldSwtTrs - I wasnt at Malla but he always said he knew. Recently he posted elsewhere which was "whistleblowed" to Reddit, pretty sure it pissed him off also.

I believe Ian and JVP know the real story.

There was an interesting short interaction between CW and Szabo last November (from 4min 30 to 6m30):

Is someone technically competent enough to asses if CW was bullshiting or did he really teach something to Szabo?

Either CW is bullshiting and that tends to accredit the con-artist thesis, or he is making sense and schooled Szabo and that tends to accredit the quintessential genius thesis.

@BldSwtTrs

i'm not technically competent to answer that. but what did he say? a "jewels stack"? (that enables Turing completeness in Forth).

English is not my native language, to that add audio quality is really abysmal. It would be fantastic if someone could provide a transcript.

"Dual stack" probably.
Here's a transcription snippet plus discussion

Anonymint read something into it

OK thanks, so Anonymint confirmed that CW has a better understanding than Szabo on this point.

So that means CW has a Satoshi-level technical competency.

Also if you watch this interview:
and look his facial expression at 1min00 when he answers "when I first came in...there wasn't a price" and around 4min45 when he finishes to explain what Bitcoin is all about, says that's Bitcoin thereafter his smile and chin say "and I did that".

It's highly unlikely he would fake his body langage and do it so well.
