SegWit was dead until Silbert entered the stage.
Whatever the reason for Segwit, is is bigger than Blockstream Core.

We now have 4 paths to activate SegWit:

- Vanilla SegWit
- BIP 148
- BIP 149
- The Silbert deal

I smell a trap where SegWit is the poison pill.
So many paths, so much trolling, such desperation to avoid a prior (or any) HF.

I doubt Blockstream Core has been knocked out, although it's possible they are being replaced or reorganised.

I came across an interesting graphic today from a /btc link (which I can't find) to a bitcoin.com thread showing various linkages in the bitcoin world.

It adds to my inclination to see a banking/government plot underlying this struggle for bitcoin's soul.

thanks @bluemoon that image is a little outdated, what's missing from that image too is the white house administrators who are directors of Bitfury and the Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC) a new "blockchain" who's who I suspect would be aligned with Bitfury's hash rate supporting segwit.
I'd love to see a comprehensive landscape of all the versions of segwit and who is funding them.

Haha, very nice @Bagatell !

I'm sure there is a story to be told about Bitfury and the relationship between it, Blockstream, and DCG, which is not apparent from the diagram, @AdrianX .

Ripple is the only altcoin to figure on the diagram and DCG has a stake in it, as do some banking interests. Maybe Ripple is the inspiration for Segwitting bitcoin?

Oh! What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.

Please remember to vote, active BU members!

There seems to be a problem where not all new applicants are listed on the voting website.
Reason is still being clarified.

In the meantime I would encourage all to check the new members thread and if necessary vote for the new members on the forum, in the traditional way.

@Bagatell

Comically I was imagining some enterprising local setting up a crackers and bananas stand, where the monkeys hang out. The overpriced food could then sold to tourists so they could trade with the monkeys for the return of their possessions.

Monkey Business™ - The Worlds first interspecies currency exchange. ;)

i'd say you could set up a franchise in Gibraltar, but they look like some exorbitant government taxes.

i don't get how we're supposed to use this new voting system. can't we just use our traditional PGP key to sign/vote? if so, where do we put the vote? in it's individual proposal thread?

Off topic a little but, just to lighten the mood.

https://www.newscientist.com/article/2132748-monkey-mafia-steal-your-stuff-then-sell-it-back-for-a-cracker/

Trade it seems, is an emergent property that extends outside of the realm of Homo sapiens.
@lunar
Non-civilized (non-collectivized/non-patronized) homines sapientes dont trade, because they are self-sufficient.
The same is true for monkeys. Civilized monkeys are not self-sufficient. That's why they're forced to trade with strangers, which is against the nature of the Hominidae.

I Love the idea you could have different levels of nutritional content at different price points (taken a bit too far you could sell rat poison even)

But if it was me I'd just walk out of sight then go pick up my glasses.

can someone do an ELi5 I need a definition of words and it would be nice if I could cut and past text into my phone to sigh the message.
[doublepost=1496173828,1496172865][/doublepost]@Zarathustra I now see your perspective, thanks. I don't think the goal is to be self sufficient, a goal is to create a stable whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

We have a problem in that parasites eventually degrade any system, Evolution is finding ways to manage parasitic relationships that build complex structures that are stable and a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Photosynthesis and Consciousness is once such result.

We live in a world now where parasitic relationships dominate, and it's nostalgic to think we can revert but we can't, it's not a war, us against parasites, it's finding a synergy that moves us forward. Bitcoin is one such synergy. There is no moving back just forwards.

As I have said before on reddit: SegWit/LN and sucking away the miner fees would be Bitcoin's slow death by planned "rippleization".

And yes, there's a damn good reason we have and continue to want to have a system with global Nakamoto consensus and NOT something that's basically just an electronic form of fiat debt paper money.

Sure it might be added on top. But that the base layer is accessible to all and easy to transact, unlike Gold, is absolutely important for Bitcoin's success. Else we'll have demonetization before it all even started.

@hodl @AdrianX:

Go to the voting site:

https://www.bitcoinunlimited.info/voting/

Scroll down till you see this:

Click on the "vote!" link for the BUIP you want to vote on.

You'll be taken to a page like what you see below. Fill in your name (needs to be consistent with the members' list) and make your choice and the site will auto populate an "action string."

Copy this string and sign it using a bitcoin address (PGP does NOT work. We are moving to Bitcoin-only signing moving forward). Paste the signature and click "submit."

You should see a screen that tells you that your vote was recorded.

*You can vote the old way for this vote, but moving forward using the voting system will become mandatory. If not everyone uses it, then its main purpose of automating the signature checking and quorum calculations are defeated. The voting system is very nice and once you get used to it, I think you'll like it. If there are things you don't like about it, we can work to improve them.
