But, when I look at the height before this sequence, and after, there is a difference of 1. Hmm.

no those are not thinblocks...that's an error in the log message which is corrected in the newer version. if you don't see the re-assembled message or creating bloom filter then you know you are just requesting regular blocks.

yes its almost certainly a bug in common code. If you google it, you'll see other instances of the same problem, including one that happened to a bitcoin client in 2014.

Unfortunately we need to see what files are open to get an idea of what is not closing the files...

Try ulimit -n <big number> to crank up your # of open files. Maybe that will make your sync finish.

Are you willing to email or PM me the output of "lsof | grep bitcoin"?
