WRT the CTs that underlie it: Why do you need a range proof on all 64 bits? Isn't it enough to prove that bit 64 is 0?

It seems that MW cannot be deployed on the main chain directly as it will have less function and features than Bitcoin can do. It can happen on sidechain.

Show me an implementation and I'll get excited about MW. Otherwise it's just yet another unimplemented soon-to-be-vaporware idea.

MimbleWimble is a rather much more easier idea than Lightning Network. MW can be described in a 2 page paper without any fundamental mathematic problems unsolved, while LN has to be explained through a paper of 60+ pages and lots of problem to be solved.

You can find a minimal implementation of MW here: https://github.com/ignopeverell/grin

AFAIK that's not quite true. You can implement about everything on the Bitcoin chain if people agree, although it would certainly be a "contentious fork".

How many Bitcoin transactions really need the scripting ability? How many are just transactions of value? MimbleWimble tx and standard Bitcoin tx could coexist on the same Blockchain afaik.
If we travelled back in time, before Bitcoin was published and there was the option for a) MimbleWimble like Bitcoin and b) Bitcoin as it is, I would have preferred the leaner version with better privacy a).

Imho it would be great to have it on the Bitcoin blockchain someday, although I don't see it happen soon. Improved scalability, and much better privacy. Goodbye Monero. ;)

Its not the unsolved mathematical problems that keeps MW from happening, it's the unsolved software development problems. You can't run a 2 page whitepaper through a compiler and get working software.
