Installing bitcoind on an external drive (such as a USB)

I am in the process of writing a bitcoin blockchain parser. I want to extract the blockchain (or interesting portions of it) into a database. The blockchain is now massive and I would prefer to keep this off my main macbook drive.

Any suggestions?
