What Exactly Is KASPA (KAS)?

Kaspa is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency that uses the GHOSTDAG protocol. GHOSTDAG, unlike traditional blockchains, does not orphan parallel blocks, but rather allows them to coexist and order them in consensus. The Kaspa blockchain is an example of a blockDAG. This Nakamoto consensus generalization enables secure operation while maintaining very high block rates (currently one block per second, aiming for 10/sec, dreaming of 100/sec) and minuscule confirmation times dominated by internet latency.

The Kaspa implementation has a lot of cool features like the ability to query the DAG's topology, block data pruning (with near-future plans for block header pruning), SPV proofs, and later subnetwork support, which will make feature layer 2 solution implementation much easier.

What are the unique advantages of Kaspa(KAS)?

Kaspa is unique in that it can support high block rates while still maintaining the level of security provided by proof-of-work environments. The current main net of Kaspa runs at 1 block per second. Core developers and researchers will work to push the capability to its limits in the future—think 10 or even 100 blocks per second.

Kaspa also includes a one-of-a-kind monetary policy that reduces emissions geometrically over time using the 12-note musical scale. This policy, known as the chromatic phase, went into effect on May 7th, 2022, with a block reward of 440 KAS. The block reward will be halved once a year, but gradually: the block reward will be reduced by a factor of (1/2)(1/12) every month. This means that the ratio of block rewards in consecutive months is the same as the frequency ratio of two consecutive semitones on a tempered chromatic scale. The initial block reward is the frequency of note A4, and each averaged year is thus referred to as an octave.

It is important to note that the policy determines how many coins are minted per second, regardless of the block rate. If Kaspa changes the block rate in the future, the reward will be adjusted to keep the same emission rate.

Who Are the Kaspa Founders?
Kaspa was conceived by R&D firm DAGLabs and funded by PolyChain.

Nonetheless, Kaspa is a community project with no central governance and no business model.

Yonatan Sompolinsky, Postdoc CS at Harvard University on the MEV Research Team, is the founder.

Yonatan's Ghost protocol paper from 2013 is cited in the Ethereum Whitepaper.

Cryptography Doctoral student Shai Wyborski, CS Master Michael Sutton, Mike Zak CS Undergrad Studies, Cryptography researcher Elichai Turkel, and Developer Ori Newman are among the Kaspa core developers and contributors who made significant contributions to the network's implementation and stability.

What is the current circulation of Kaspa (KAS) coins?
As of June 2022, there are approximately 8.5 billion KAS in circulation.
