I think he decided to be neutral on the subject as his job is to give speeches and advice about Bitcoin no matter who the dev's are. Then about 6 months ago he was all of a sudden pro Sham Wow, giving speeches about lighting & Separated Witness back to back. I think at this point he got a pay out. This is all my own theory of course.

Yes, it is very odd how someone who was intrigued about every new solution and always neutral to which is the better one suddenly flipped to be very vocal pro SegWit/LN and anti BU.

In the above Q&A he was also asked about Rootstock (RSK) and didn't say almost nothing about it as if it was not interesting to learn about it at all.
